We will be calling the chords by their form names, not the actual names on the chords. For example, the D form (shape) is actually a D# chord when played up one frets. This strumming pattern happens for most of the song. 

There are a lot of moving parts with open strings. The Am chord toggles with Aadd9 and the D chord has moving notes, on the high E string, though the chord. The result is a Dsus and a Dadd9. (Watch the video lesson for a deeper explanation.)
